Synopsis

A319 First Officer reported an aircraft steering failure while exiting the runway. The Captain steered clear of the runway; remained on the taxiway and notified ATC to coordinate a tug to the gate.

Narrative

I was the pilot flying. Touchdown and rollout was normal on landing for Runway XXR. Directional control using rudder on the landing roll was normal. I did not apply any brake pressure during the rollout and full reverse thrust was used. We transferred controls right around 80 knots. He began to apply steady braking to slow the aircraft down as we approached high speed turn off Taxiway 1. The Captain turned the aircraft towards Taxiway 1; and as the aircraft was steadily decelerating on the high speed Taxiway; we received an ECAM WHEEL N/W STRG FAULT. The Captain applied rudder pedal deflection to steer the aircraft. The aircraft jerked to the left and right as the Captain tried to steer the aircraft away from the edge of the Taxiway and back towards the centerline of Taxiway 1 using rudder pedals. I thought there may be a loss of braking issue while this was occurring so I quickly asked if he would like me to flip the N/W Steering switch. The aircraft coasted across the Runway hold short line and came to a stop. Brake temperatures and hydraulics appeared normal. The Captain proceeded to notify ATC that we had lost our steering abilities. We completed the ECAM; and ATC took the initiative to roll the trucks to our location and notify the company. The Captain then proceeded to contact the flight attendants to inform them of our situation. I proceeded to contact operations to request the ground crew to tug us to our Gate; XX. We completed the tow-in supplemental procedure and were towed to the Gate without further incident.
