SMA PLT IN IMC ASSIGNED XING ALT DSNDS TOO FAST; OVERSHOOTS ILS INTERCEPT AND ALT. ATTEMPTS TO GET BACK ON COURSE. ATC INTERCEDES.

Narrative

WHILE JUST WNW OF RDM VOR HDG 115 DEGS ON V165 AT 13000; CTR ADVISED ME TO DISREGARD A PLANNED HOLD AT THE VOR AND TO PROCEED DIRECT BODEY (LOM); MAINTAIN 8000 UNTIL XING BODEY; CLRED ILS RWY 22. IN MY HASTE TO DSND AND AFTER ENTERING IMC AT 8500 I CROSSED BODEY AT ABOUT 200 MPH AND OVERSHOT THE ILS OUTBOUND COURSE (FULL NEEDLE DEFLECTION). WHILE REMAINING WITHIN 10 NM AT 6500 AND SLOWING I ATTEMPTED TO NAV BACK TO THE ILS OUTBOUND COURSE VIA ADF. MY ADF NEEDLE SEEMED TO BE STICKING SO I RECYCLED THE TUNER AND BEGAN TO NAV BACK TO COURSE AFTER IT WAS WORKING. CTR NOTICED MY DIFFICULTY AND ACKNOWLEDGED I WAS CORRECTING. HOWEVER; CTR INTERCEDED BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO RECAPTURE THE ILS OUTBOUND COURSE AND SENT ME BACK TO THE RDM VOR AT 8000. SUBSEQUENTLY CTR WORKED TFC INTO THE CTL ZONE AHEAD OF ME AND THEN VECTORED ME TO THE ILS FINAL APCH COURSE AND I SUCCESSFULLY MADE THE APCH. THE PROBLEM SEEMED TO BE THAT I COMMENCED THE APCH AT TOO HIGH OF AN AIRSPD RESULTING FROM TOO RAPID A DSCNT. THIS RESULTED IN MY MISSING THE ILS OUTBOUND COURSE. NAV BACK TO COURSE WAS COMPOUNDED BY AN INTERMITTENT ADF. THE CTR CTLR WAS OBSERVANT AND CORRECTED THE SITUATION IN A MANNER THAT WAS BOTH EFFICIENT AND SAFER THAN ALLOWING ME TO NAV BACK TO THE ILS.
