Synopsis

B737 Captain taxiing reported they had to make a sudden stop to avoid another taxiing aircraft crossing their intended path.

Narrative

Taxiing inbound at ZZZ east on Taxiway 1 shortly after crossing Runway XL there was an E175 on Taxiway 2 north east bound. The aircraft was abeam our aircraft and taxiing faster than us so we slowed to sequence behind them. Inbound Ground Control never gave us traffic alert or instructions to follow but we did anyway. After the aircraft passed we continued to taxi behind the aforementioned aircraft. The First Officer caught a second E175 aircraft taxiing at a high speed on Taxiway 2 coming from behind and to our right. He instructed me to stop the aircraft immediately. I brought the aircraft to an abrupt stop on Taxiway 1 short of 2 as the second E175 taxied past us at high speed. Ground Controller said nothing about the event nor did they give any instructions for sequencing. The two E175 aircraft were on the outbound ground frequency and we were on the inbound ground frequency. This was a very near miss and could have cause major aircraft damage to both aircraft had we not taken immediate and aggressive corrective actions.
