SMT OVERSHOT RWY HOLD LINES CAUSING TWR TO ISSUE GAR TO AN ACFT ON APCH.
Narrative
WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO TAXI FROM THE GATE TO THE ACTIVE RWY; VIA SEVERAL TAXIWAYS TO AVOID A WDB PUSHING BACK FROM THE INNER CONCOURSE. AS WE PROCEEDED AROUND THE S END OF THE TERMINAL WE REMAINED ON THE TAXIWAY THAT WE BELIEVED WAS THE TAXIWAY LEADING TO THE ACTIVE RWY. ONCE WE REALIZED THIS; WE STOPPED SHORT OF THE RWY. GND CTL THEN CALLED US AND INSTRUCTED US TO PROCEED ONTO THE RWY TURN 90 DEGS TO THE NEXT TAXIWAY AND PROCEED. I PROCEEDED TO APOLOGIZE; AND THE CTLR STATED; 'NO PROBLEM; WE KNOW THOSE TAXIWAYS ARE POORLY MARKED.' SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 204808. APPARENTLY AN ACFT WAS INSTRUCTED TO GAR BECAUSE OF OUR POS NEAR THE ACFT RWY. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO. THEY LEFT THE RAMP ON LIMA AND TURNED L ON XRAY. THEY MISSED THE TURN ON NOVEMBER AND STOPPED JUST PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINES ON XRAY AT RWY 26. HE SAID THEY DID NOT ACTUALLY ENTER THE RWY. HE SAID THE SIGNAGE AT INTXNS OF TAXIWAYS XRAY; NOVEMBER AND WHISKEY ARE POOR; ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT. HE ALSO FOUND FAULT WITH THE SIGNS AND HOLD SHORT LINES ON XRAY AT RWY 26.
