Synopsis
B-787 flight crew reported a near miss between the aircraft and the jetway while being guided into parking at the gate. The ramp employee mis-identified the model of aircraft and parked it at the incorrect stop position. The gate agent noticed and immediately moved the jetway to avoid a collision.
Narrative
We pushed backed normally and began taxiing. During taxi; we had a maintenance issue and we concluded (with maintenance control) that a RTG (Return To Gate) was required. We were given gate 1 as a return gate. We taxied in normally; we had wing walkers on both sides and a guide. The CA (Captain) followed the guide's instructions; parked and set the brakes. At that point; the ground crew came on headset and told us: I need to move the plane. I didn't realize this was a -8. I thought it was a -9." He repositioned us and we parked and opened the door. We then came to find out that the #1 engine had come extremely close to contacting the jet bridge. The gate agent realized what was happening and actually started moving the bridge up so as to avoid the engine (which apparently saved the day). No damage or injuries occurred; but it was a near miss. I only have first hand knowledge of the ground crew telling us they thought they were parking a different plane and then moving us. Everything else that happened outside was relayed to me second hand."
Second reporter narrative
Returned to blocks for maintenance. Marshaller guided aircraft to gate. After completion of Parking Checklist; Ground crew called on interphone and informed us that he mistakenly parked us at the wrong spot since he assumed we were on a 787-9 versus our actual 787-8. Seated passengers and was pushed back to the correct spot.Unbeknownst to us the left engine almost contacted the jetway while we were being marshaled in. A quick-thinking and sharp gate agent meeting our flight saw the impending collision and quickly raised the jetway and averted an impact.
