Narrative

I was working with an instructor on approaches and landings to maintain my instrument rating currency. We were on the last of three separate practice instrument approaches and landings. My two previous approaches and landings had been normal and uneventful. We were unaware that; sometime after taking off after the second landing of the session; a bolt had come loose and gone missing from the nosegear torque link. My last approach; to Runway XX at ZZZ; was normal. The landing onto the main wheels also was normal and all was fine until the nose wheel touched the runway. The plane then yanked hard and suddenly to the left and it went off the runway onto the grass. The instructor and I are fine with no effects. The only aircraft problems are that the bolt was missing from the nosegear torque link and a fairing was damaged from the left main hitting a taxiway light. My mechanic has confirmed that only the missing torque link bolt needs to be replaced and there is no structural damage to the aircraft.Because there were no injuries and the aircraft did not suffer substantial damage; the incident did not rise to an 'accident' as defined by NTSB regulations.
