Synopsis

Air carrier flight crew reported radio systems malfunctioned after a liquid spill on center console. Diverted and landed uneventfully.

Narrative

Around 1 hour into flight at FL300 a small amount of water was accidentally spilled on center console. We attempted to clean up the spill but both dispays went blank where the frequency is displayed. We were unable to switch frequencies and our ACARS was inop with the VHF-3 screen also blank and constant switching from Data to Voice trying to connect. Radio 1 was tuned to ATC and Radio 2 to Guard. ZZZ Center was very helpful and set up a hold for us to work the issue. ZZZ was able to contact the Company and rely our plan to divert to ZZZ which they concurred. ZZZ was VFR and we were below max weight. Due to the nature of the problem we switched PM (Pilot Monitoring) and PF (Pilot Fying) duties and I landed the aircraft. We checked the Flight Manual and there was no procedure and we reviewed the FOM diversion section. We discussed multiple scenarios and CRM was very helpful to come up with our best solution. We ran through the briefing with the FAs and the passengers were briefed on our diversion. We used Guard for the ATC handoffs through descent which worked out perfectly. Hats off to ATC. Approach and landing was uneventful and ZZZ Maintence did their best to try and fix the jet.

Second reporter narrative

About 1 hour enroute; a water bottle was accidentally tipped over and spilled on the center console. We acted quickly to clean up the spill with paper towels; but both displays blanked out where the frequency would normally be displayed. We were unable to change radio frequencies; and our ACARs was also not working. Radio 1 was tuned to our current ATC frequency (ZZZ Center) and radio 2 tuned to 121.5; guard frequency. Because ACARS wasn't working; we had no Company communications. ZZZ Center was extremely helpful; and [gave priority handling] for us. We set up a holding pattern to work through the issue. ZZZ was able to contact the Company and relay their recommendation to divert to ZZZ. We had also come to the same conclusion. ZZZ weather was VFR. We were below maximum landing weight. Due to the nature of the problem; we switched PF (Pilot Flying) and PM (Pilot Monitoring) roles. The FO (First Officer) flew the approach and landing; and I performed the PM role. There was no guidance for our radio situation. We discussed multiple options and scenarios and reviewed the FOM diversion section. CRM was extremely helpful in presenting options and discussing aspects of the situation. We informed the FAs briefed the passengers of our diversion plans. We used guard frequency to talk to ATC throughout our descent and landing. The approach and landing was uneventful. The passengers deplaned and the aircraft was turned over to maintenance.
