MECH RPTR CONCERNED OVER ACCURACY AND SCOPE OF LOGBOOK SIGN OFF RELATIVE TO LOGBOOK WRITE UP.

Narrative

ON MAR/MON/92; ACR MLG LANDED AT ORD. AFTER TAXIING IN; THE FLC CALLED IN A MAINT ITEM THAT THE R AFT OVERWING EXIT HANDLE COVER FELL OFF ON THAT LNDG. I WAS ASSIGNED TO THIS ACFT. WHEN I WENT OUT TO THE AIRPLANE; THE FLC AND PAX HAD ALL DEPLANED. UPON INSPECTION OF THE R AFT OVERWING EXIT; I FOUND THAT THE EXIT DID NOT HAVE THE COVERS OVER THE HANDLES. AFTER REVIEWING THE LOGBOOK AGAIN; I VERIFIED THAT THE WRITE-UP WAS INDEED; 'ON TOUCHDOWN THE R AFT OVERWING EXIT OPENED.' THIS WAS DIFFERENT FROM THE INITIAL MAINT ITEM CALLED IN. TALKING TO THE FLC LATER; THEY SAID THEY WERE INITIALLY MISINFORMED ABOUT WHAT OCCURRED AND CALLED IN AGAIN AND CHANGED THE INITIAL WRITE-UP. UPON LEARNING THIS NEW INFO; I RE-INSPECTED THE EXIT; REMOVED THE EXIT DOOR AND INSPECTED THE AREA THOROUGHLY. I FOUND NO DEFECTS; REINSTALLED THE WINDOW AND SAFETY WIRED THE HANDLE SHUT. MY ACTUAL SIGN OFF IN THE LOGBOOK WAS 'INSPECTED R AFTER OVERWING EXIT; FOUND TO BE PROPERLY INSTALLED; NO DEFECTS NOTED.' (I SUSPECT A PAX MAY HAVE BEEN HANDLING THE EXIT). THAT NIGHT; I CALLED ACR TECH FAC ABOUT THE SITUATION. SPOKE TO MR X OR MR Y AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY WOULD PUT OUT AN ITEM TO HAVE NASHVILLE (THE ACFT DEST THAT NIGHT) INSPECT THE DOOR. NO ITEM WAS REF AND THIS PROBLEM DID NOT REPEAT ITSELF.
