SMA IN EVASIVE ACTION IN PROX OF OBSTRUCTION AT RWY END STALLS AND CRASHES.
Narrative
LNDG INCIDENT. ON SHORT FINAL APCH; AIRSPD WAS A LITTLE SLOWER THAN USUAL; DUE TO THE DESIRE TO GET DOWN AND STOPPED IN 500 FT OR LESS; FOR A SHORT FIELD LNDG. IT WAS A GRASS STRIP ADJACENT TO THE PAVED RWY. I WAS USING THE GRASS TO AVOID ANY OTHER TFC IN THE AREA WHO WOULD BE USING THE PAVED RWY. ABOUT 50 FT FROM THE GRASS STRIP END; IT APPEARED THAT I WAS LOW ENOUGH THAT I MIGHT NOT CLR SOME LARGE 'CAN/BARREL' TYPE END MARKERS ON THE END OF THE GRASS STRIP. I WAS ABOUT 3 FT AGL AND STARTING TO FLARE FOR TOUCHDOWN. BUT WHEN THOSE LARGE 'CAN' MARKERS ON THE END OF THE GRASS STRIP APPEARED TO BE HIGH ENOUGH TO HAMPER MY COMMITTED TOUCHDOWN; I ADDED PWR TO CLR THEM. THE ADDED PWR CAUSED A SLIGHT PITCH-UP RESULTING IN A STALL AT ABOUT 3 FT AGL. THE ACFT PITCHED OVER STRIKING THE GND R WING DOWN AND ON THE NOSE AND L GEAR LEG. DUE TO THE SLOW SPD AND LOW ALT (APPROX 3 FT AGL) AND BEING STRAPPED IN VERY WELL; I WAS NOT INJURED AT ALL. THE ACFT SUSTAINED DAMAGE TO THE R WING; THE PROP; THE NOSE COWL; AND THE L LNDG GEAR LEG. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE COCKPIT AREA; AND THERE WAS NO FIRE. I IMMEDIATELY SHUT OFF ALL SWITCHES AND FUEL VALVE; AND EXITED THE ACFT THROUGH THE L ENTRY DOOR. ALTHOUGH; I FEEL IT WAS A BAD JUDGEMENT CALL ON MY PART TO TRY TO CLR THE LARGE 'CAN' TYPE END MARKERS ON THE GRASS STRIP BY ADDING PWR; WHICH DID RESULT IN A STALL; SINCE I WAS FLARING FOR TOUCHDOWN AT THE TIME. IT IS MY CONSIDERED OPINION THAT LARGE 'CAN/BARREL' TYPE END MARKERS ARE TOTALLY UNNECESSARY ON A GRASS STRIP OF THIS TYPE. THEY ARE MORE A HINDERANCE AND A HAZARD THAN ANY GOOD THEY DO; AND I WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE TO SEE THEM REMOVED. I'VE FLOWN OFF SEVERAL GRASS STRIPS IN 2 STATES; AND THIS IS THE ONLY ONE THAT USES A LARGE RWY MARKER OF THIS TYPE.
