Synopsis
Air carrier Captain reported the aircraft was not under positive control for a short time during pushback at MDPC/PUJ airport after experiencing communication difficulties with ground personnel.
Narrative
During push back; Ground changed and requested for the aircraft push beyond taxiway B. At the same time the push crew stopped. I told them the new instructions to continue pushing back to allow taxiway B to be used. I heard Roger". A few seconds later he asked if "brakes released.?" I said "parking brake released cleared to continue push farther back." A few seconds later I saw tug backing up and disconnect. I inquired immediately to what was going on; followed by setting parking break to prevent any aircraft movement. I asked what was going on; and this is where communication was lost in English. The headset was handed off to another ground personnel. I explained we were instructed to continue push farther back to allow an aircraft in taxiway B. He apologized; but by this point they were disconnected from the tug. We verified with ground we can disconnect where we were; and then followed with "parking brake set". Then following SOP was done; but my concern was the possibility of the person on the headset either not able to hear clearly or not understand English. Risk was mitigated by remaining aware of the ground crew; and by quick action to set parking brake; but communication broke down."
