Synopsis

C310 flight instructor and student reported the landing gear light did not illuminate when they dropped the gear preparing for a landing. The pilots decided to return to the departure airport where the gear collapsed upon touchdown.

Narrative

While flying a Cessna 310 on a practice ILS approach in ZZZ1; we noticed the gear light did not illuminate. We elected to do a low approach at ZZZ1 to verify the issue and the tower stated that the gear appeared to be down.We departed the airspace and started to troubleshoot while leaving the gear down. We spoke to the owner-operator via cell phone and we decided to land at our original point of departure. Prior to landing we briefed each other on the possibility of a gear collapse; appropriate landing speeds; and completed all appropriate emergency checklists and procedures. On final approach at ZZZ; we were also told that the gear appeared down and locked by the owner operator who was on the ground; waiting for us to land.Upon landing the left main gear collapsed and we skidded to the left of the runway coming to a full stop. Mixtures were immediately moved to idle-cutoff upon touchdown with verification that the gear was not down and locked. Fuel selectors; magnetos; boost pumps; alternators and battery were turned off. We exited the aircraft swiftly. No injuries and no conflicts with other aircraft on the ground occurred.Crew resource management was utilized in this event. I completed the landing as the instructor on board; and the student handled communications. This event occurred during training for a multi engine commercial rating with 2 souls on board.
