Synopsis

B737-700 flight crew reported the #1 Engine rolled back and had flames coming out of it during the top of descent. The affected was shut down and the flight crew made an uneventful landing without incident.

Narrative

#1 Engine malfunction at top of descent into ZZZ. We were cleared to start our descent from FL380 to FL340 and once the descent started; we noticed a shutter in the airframe. I looked at the engine gauges and saw the #1 N1 roll back to about 40 percent and spool back to normal. About a minute later the airframe shuttered again and the same roll back occurred. It was about this time that we got a call from the FAs (Flight Attendant) that there was a noticeable flame that was seen out the back of the #1 Engine. I disconnected the autopilot and autothrottle and recoordinated the aircraft. We decided that the most appropriate action at this point was to shut the engine down and secure it. We ran the appropriate checklists and [requested priority handling] and requested that emergency vehicles inspect the aircraft after landing before taxiing to the gate. Approach and landing were executed without further incident. After parking at the gate; we also had engine control lights illuminated and the A Hydraulic System was showing 74 percent RF (Refill).

Second reporter narrative

While approaching top of descent; experienced significant airframe shudder/vibration followed by #1 Engine rollback. Had a second similar event followed by passenger reports of flames coming from #1 Engine. We decided to shut down the #1 Engine and completed the Engine Failure/Shutdown Checklist. We performed an uneventful single engine approach and landing to Runway XXL at ZZZ.
