Narrative

Worked a 737-800; new aircraft. We were in the middle of our beverage service and on our way to ZZZ1 when the Captain called the front and back. I was in the aft galley and overheard the Captain telling the Purser that we had an issue with the gas line and that it wasn't anything too serious; but their checklist was telling them to divert to ZZZ & we had 10 minutes to prepare for landing. The Purser received brief information and we began preparing the cabin for landing. The Purser then made an announcement; turned the lights to bright; and we picked up all remaining service items. I prepared the galley for landing. The Captain then came on and let the passengers know that we were diverting and had our left engine down. This was the first time we had heard of the engine being down. During our debrief; the Captain shared that it went down shortly after he called us about the gas line issue; but he was preoccupied with handling the situation and getting us on the ground safely; so he did not call us back regarding the engine out. Once all was picked up; we sat in our jump seats; performed a silent review and I reminded my coworker that we may need to use the command 'remain seated'. We were not sure if we were going to evacuate or not; but once we were on the ground; firefighters met the plane to inspect for possible fire and we did not have any issues. I was told that the left engine was covered in fuel. Our Purser made another announcement letting the passengers know that they would be deplaning once we got to the gate and to take their belongings with them. We did have a debriefing with the pilots and Supervisor from ZZZ. We talked about things we did great on and things that we could have done differently. The pilots and cabin crew did an amazing job with the situation and getting the passengers on the ground safely. Supervisor gave us the choice to deadhead back to ZZZ2 or continue on the trip. The pilots and several crew members decided to not continue the trip based on the stressful event.
