Synopsis

B777 flight crew reported smoke in the flight deck during arrival descent. Smoke dissipated during approach and flight landed safely.

Narrative

While descending on the STAR to ZZZZ I noticed an unusual smell. It didn't smell like anything burning or electrical and was at first barely noticeable. At about the time we leveled at 13000 ft.; it got stronger and we got a SMOKE CREW REST F/D (Forward) " EICAS. Soon after we could see smoke present under the overhead storm lights. The smell got more intense and changed a bit but was still not what I would describe as a "burning" or electrical smell. I donned my O2 (Oxygen) mask and established crew communications. The Captain told me to [request priority handling] and get as direct a routing to the final approach fix as possible. I [advised ATC] that we had smoke in cockpit; asking for expedited routing.I looked up the EICAS warning in the FM (Flight Manual) and there is no procedure. The second Captain mentioned terrain avoidance about this time which was a good reminder given the area around ZZZZ. Since I didn't revisit the QRC and was busy with ATC; the other FO (First Officer) pulled the QRC and ran it. About the time we intercepted the localizer most of the smoke was gone. After clearing the runway; ARFF (Airport Rescue and Firefighting) inspected our exterior reporting that all appeared normal. We proceeded uneventfully to the gate."

Second reporter narrative

On descent into ZZZZ just prior to ZZZZZ at about 13000 ft.; SMOKE IN FWD (Forward) CREW REST EICAS message came on while establishing comm with the flight attendants we can hear the alarm in the back. At that point we can smell and see smoke in the cockpit. Followed checklist put oxygen masks on and the relief Captain and FO (First Officer) ran more fumes checklist. [We advised ATC] and received vectors to final Runway XL. While running the checklist smoke started to dissipate after turning IFE (In Flight Entertainment); BROAD BAND; and RECIRCULATE FANS off. Kept speed up til final and flew normal approach and landing Runway XL. Crash Fire Rescue looked us over then we proceeded to the gate.
