Synopsis
Air carrier crew reported a GPWS alert on approach in IMC weather conditions. The crew performed a go around; then flew another approach to a safe landing.
Narrative
Flying the ILS 20L approach into KBNA. We were flying a heading of about 230 to intercept the Localizer. We intercepted and got a clearance of; cross JUUDD at 2000; cleared ILS 20L approach". We set 2000 ft; went into Vertical speed mode; then hit APPROACH mode. On our way down; we set 3000 for the missed approach altitude without realizing we did not capture the glideslope. We configured and completed the landing checklist. We noticed that we appeared low; because we were hustling to get the landing checklist finished before we were 1000 ft AGL. We then noticed we were well below 2000 for JUUDD; and the aircraft ground proximity system announced; "Glideslope". Without delay; we executed the go around with no issue. We came back around for a longer approach and executed another approach with no issue. Cause: Insufficient attention to the FMA and glideslope lead to setting a higher altitude and not allowing the flight director and autopilot to capture and comply with the clearance. Solution: Not setting a higher altitude; even a missed approach altitude unless more attention is paid to current position and mode."
Second reporter narrative
Continued descending on localizer before capturing glideslope leading to GND PROX caution and subsequent go around. On approach to 20L into BNA; we were cleared down to 2000 from 3000 and cleared for the approach. Once established on the localizer we were descending down to 2000 in IMC. At some point above 2000 the CA (PM) prematurely dialed in the missed altitude of 3000. He verbalized 3000 and I confirmed. Because we had not captured yet; we continued in our descent rate; performed a landing checklist as we were fully configured; when we got a ground proximity caution. The CA immediately called out go around" and we performed a go around. Got new vectors onto the same approach and landed without further issue.Cause: Premature altitude change by captain coupled with FO confirming without verifying. We had been in IMC for most of the flight which added a level of difficulty.Solution: A very simple mistake that had big implications. The procedure is in place so we both verify the decision. He was too quick and I was too complacent and we both missed it. Had we been in VMC it would've been easy to catch. Better attention to details; especially in IMC."
