Synopsis
B787 first officers reported a conflict on short final and a go-around issued by ATC. The pilots were later informed they had deviated from their assigned track during the missed approach maneuver.
Narrative
Standard arrival into ZZZ from ZZZZ via ZZZZZ arrival with vectors to ILSXXR. While established on final near ZZZZZ1; Aircraft Y was cleared [TO] takeoff but appeared slow to begin their takeoff. In cockpit; we identified unlikeliness of making landing due to Aircraft Y; delayed takeoff roll. First Officer (FO) reviewed aloud the go-around procedures in preparation for a likely go-around. We continued approach waiting for Aircraft Y to takeoff. Tower directed us to go-around. FO was the pilot flying and initiated the go-around procedures as previously briefed. Tower assigned us heading 260 and an altitude but the altitude assignment was initially unclear. Captain; the pilot monitoring; queried Tower to repeat altitude assignment; Tower repeated 2100 and Captain (CA) and FO worked together to reconfigure the aircraft and fly heading 260 and climb to 2100. After turning to 260 we went IMC. Tower directed us to switch to ZZZ. CA asked Tower for ZZZ Approach frequency. I typed ZZZ frequency into the radio to ease crew workload. CA contacted ZZZ and we were assigned new heading 180 and new altitude of 5000. CA set 5000 and FO set heading 180 in Mode Control Panel (MCP). CA declared minimum fuel. While returning for ILS XXR; ATC questioned our flight path and thought we deviated from assigned heading. ZZZ Controller informed us he had a phone number for us to write down and call after landing. The Controller gave us a few seconds to find a writing utensil/paper to write the number. I wrote down XXX-XXX-XXXX to back up CA . CA repeated phone number to ZZZ Controller. The remainder of the flight was uneventful. We received vectors to ILSXXR; landed; taxied to gate 1; shutdown on taxiway near gate 2 in preparation for required tow-in into gate 2. After we completed flying duties and all checklists we contacted ZZZ.
Second reporter narrative
While on short final to Runway XXR at ZZZ; Tower clears Aircraft Y to taxi into position and hold on XXR. We had been cleared to land. Aircraft Y was then cleared for take off. At app. 700 AGL; Tower directs us to go-around. The go-around procedure was initiated and Tower gave us a heading of 260 degrees and an altitude of 2100. Departure gave us a new heading of 180 degrees and an altitude of 5000. While on a heading of 180 degrees; finishing up our procedures and climbing through app. 3000; we were told to call Tower after landing and to copy down a phone number. ATC was under the impression that we had been on a heading of 280 instead of 260. We were in and out of clouds and in proximity of terrain when requested to write down the number to call.
