Synopsis

B787 flight crew reported an engine fire and inflight shutdown. Flight crew returned to departure airport and landed safely.

Narrative

Shortly after going to the bunks for first break; a loud noise was heard along with what sounded like an engine spooling down. An interphone call from the cockpit came soon after; informing that the aircraft had a left engine fire indication; the engine had been secured via the checklist; we were returning to ZZZZ as a priority aircraft; and that both relief pilots were needed back in the cockpit ASAP. We entered the cockpit in a safe and timely fashion and proceeded to assist and back up both flying pilots with the air return; fuel jettison; ATC communication and coordination with Dispatch. The aircraft descended; receiving lower altitudes as necessary for aircraft performance. A fuel jettison was performed to get below max landing weight via the checklist on the way back to the field with coordination from ATC. A single engine flaps 20 approach and landing was performed at ZZZZ; followed by an uneventful taxi to gate; where ARFF (Airport Rescue and Firefighting) met us at the gate.

Second reporter narrative

Per the checklist fire was extinguished and engine secured. Direct divert back to ZZZZ.taxied to gate.
