Synopsis
Flight crew reported on takeoff roll had a #2 engine failure. They rejected the takeoff and taxied back to the gate.
Narrative
Cleared for takeoff on Runway XXR. Brought the thrust levers up to 40% N1 and let them stabilize. All indications were normal. Slowly advanced thrust levers toward our takeoff thrust of 98.4; around 80-90% right as I was verbalizing Set takeoff thrust'; we heard a bang and the aircraft started veering to the right. We were around 40 knots; so rudder effectiveness was not enough; so I used the tiller to maintain center line while performing a low speed rejected takeoff. FO announced engine failure the same time that I looked at the gauges and saw the ENG Fail Alert illuminated on the EGT. The FO made the radio call to ATC informing them of the rejected takeoff. We exited at Taxiway 1 and were instructed to hold short of [taxiway] 2. I briefed the F/As (Flight Attendants) and the passengers on what occurred while the FO retrieved the QRH for Engine Failure. ATC had us eventually taxi clear of the runway. We ran and accomplished the QRH up to all that applied to our situation. FO coordinated with Ops on a gate while I sent Dispatch a message regarding our situation. Taxied back to the gate uneventfully; made a logbook entry; notified Dispatch via phone along with Maintenance Control. The engine was on a watch by Maintenance; maybe it needed to be pulled out of service sooner."
Second reporter narrative
Taxied out to Runway XXR uneventful. Captain was Pilot Flying. Once cleared for takeoff; Captain began to increase the power to takeoff thrust. Prior to being able to finish his set take of thrust; __%" call; around 80% N1; we heard a loud bang; and the aircraft began to yaw hard to the right. The Captain began the low speed reject (approximately 20-40 knots.) with no indication of what had occurred yet and as we began to slow; we got the Engine #2 fail indication. We continue to come to a stop; I announced the reject to Tower. We were given the clearance to taxi off [taxiway] 1 short of [taxiway] 2 and taxied clear of the runway. Once clear; we ran the Engine Failure QRH. Once the checklist was complete; we taxied back to the gate single engine. The rest of the taxi was uneventful."
