Synopsis
ERJ-145 flight crew reported receiving a baggage smoke indication on descent. They fired the bottle; and post flight inspection showed no indication of fire.
Narrative
Descending between FL240 and 15;000ft; we had a baggage smoke indication. The FO was pilot flying and I confirmed he had the aircraft; and radios; then I called the flight attendant and asked her to look through the sight glass in the lav into the baggage compartment. I pulled the QRC and referenced bag smoke; which called for us to push the baggage fire extinguishing button. At this point I [requested priority handling] to ATC and relayed the amount of fuel we had on board and souls on board. I asked them to relay that we wanted to the the ILS RWY XXR in ZZZ [airport]; we would come to a stop on the runway in order to have the fire teams inspect the aircraft for evidence of fire. The flight attendant called back and said she saw no evidence of fire in the baggage compartment. I told the FA (Flight Attendant) to stay seated; that we would be landing in less than ten minutes and it was a precautionary landing. I made an announcement to the passengers advising them of the situation and that we would be stopping on the runway; and to remain seated and follow my instructions. I sent a message to dispatch advising that we had bag smoke; we ran the QRC and QRH; we're landing in ZZZ and that we [advised ATC]. We continued direct ZZZ and descended to 2;000' where we were cleared for a visual approach. After landing in ZZZ; I made an announcement to the cabin telling them to remain seated; the fire crews inspected the aircraft and advised that they did not see anything indicating that there was a fire. We proceeded to the gate where I coordinated with ramp managers and maintenance in order to deplane the passengers and get them their baggage. We made sure to advise ramp and maintenance to be cautious of fumes from the fire extinguishing agent in the baggage compartment. I talked to the chief pilot to make sure everything was handled properly; them I entered a write up in the aircraft maintenance log; and made reports with maintenance and dispatch.Suggestion: Maintain proper knowledge of emergency procedures.
Second reporter narrative
Noticed Fire Extg Bagg Button light on overhead was illuminated on the decent between FL240-FL150. Ran associated Memory Item; QRC; and QRH procedure. Had the FA (Flight Attendant) go to the back and check through the peep hole to confirm indications. [Requested priority handling] with ATC; and sent ACARS message to dispatch. Informed FA and pax (passengers) of indication and precautionary landing that was about to take place. Upon landing were met by ARFF (Airport Rescue and Firefighting). After ARFF inspection and was assured no indications of a problem; we proceeded to the gate maintaining communications with ops; airport managers; maintenance; ground crews; and pax to allow for adequate timing of fumes to dissipate before cargo door was opened.
