Synopsis

EMB-145 crew reported the takeoff roll was rejected when the Number 2 engine failed soon after power was set.

Narrative

After being cleared for takeoff; I advanced both thrust levers to takeoff power. At approximately 30% N1 we heard a loud 'Bang'; we may also have had an 'ENG 2 FAIL' EICAS warning; however this message only appeared momentarily. I immediately rejected the takeoff roll and the FO contacted the Tower. I brought the airplane to a complete stop and the FO and I did an instrument check. There were no indications of [priority handling]; and the only abnormal EICAS message was an amber E2 NO DISP" message. Tower asked us if we were capable of taxiing off the runway. We exited the runway. There we then ran an After Landing Checklist and consulted the QRH (Quick Reference Handbook). We secured the number 2 engine and called maintenance control on my mobile phone.During this phone call; we felt the flight deck and cabin temperatures rising so we started the APU and recycled the packs to cool the air. We began to smell fumes so we immediately turned off the packs. The smell started to dissipate immediately however the FO and I thought it would be wise to have [priority handling] vehicles come and check the aircraft before taxiing back to gate. After we were given the OK from [priority handling] services; we taxied to gate and deplaned our passengers. To my knowledge there were no passenger or crew injuries caused by this incident."

Second reporter narrative

Engine two failure on takeoff roll. Told to line up and wait; got the clearance for takeoff; Captain advanced thrust to spool engines then fully advanced thrust for takeoff and almost immediately heard a loud bang. I noticed engine N1 rolling down from about 30 percent then felt a strong yaw to the right. We were at a low indicated airspeed when rejecting takeoff. I told Tower we were rejecting and taxied off [the runway]. Ran after landing checklist then consulted the QRH (Quick Reference Handbook). We secured number two engine. No indication other than E2 no dispatch when sitting on the ramp. We had no indications that the packs were closed; however we didn't have any air conditioning so we cycled the packs to get them to work. The Captain and I decided to call the [priority handling] trucks after smelling fumes when we turn the packs on. We immediately shut the packs off when we noticed the smell. There was no visible smoke and the fumes dissipated when shut the packs off. Taxied back to the gate with [priority handling] vehicles. To my knowledge there were no injuries.
