General aviation pilot flying reported the runway 36L hold markings at VQQ were faded and covered by tall grass.
Synopsis
General aviation pilot flying reported the runway 36L hold markings at VQQ were faded and covered by tall grass.
Narrative
Situation: Potential encroachment of the runway hold position markings with faded/light paint and where no hot spots were indicated. Background: Prior to the flight; I analyzed the airport diagram (VQQ) and the chart supplement. I also determined there were no hot spots. After landing; I exited [Runway] 36R to the left onto Taxiway A4. As I came to a complete stop past the runway hold position line; the Tower asked what my intentions were. I informed the Tower that I wanted to take off again to fly to ZZZ1; so the Tower advised me to taxi up on A4 and hold short of Runway 36L. A couple seconds later; as I was taxiing; the Tower provided a new transponder code. During this time of talking with the controller and entering the new transponder code; I approached the runway hold position markings and slammed on the brakes. Of course after coming to a stop and analyzing; I ascertained they were the hold-short position markings of a runway hold position line. While I know for certain I did not go beyond the hold-short line - in other words; being fully on the Runway 36L protected side of the hold-short markings - I cannot say where the nose and tip of the propeller were vertically located.Potential Causes: I see this one having 2 primary causes. First and foremost; I should have come to a complete stop when entering the new transponder code. Second; the markings of the runway hold position markings were extremely faded and there was also grass at least one foot high growing in the area of these runway hold position markings. I cannot recall ever seeing any runway hold position markings as faded as these. Further; there was grass growing up in the concrete so the faded runway hold position markings with the black paint looked as if the yellow markings were maybe an attempt to be painted over while some of the yellow was maybe still fading through the black paint. This is similar imagery to roadway lines being blacked out by DOT where you can still sort of make out the old roadway lines. Due to these visual cues and a sub consciousness of thinking it was old lines being painted over; my eyes were looking ahead in the distance to 36L which is where I thought the runway hold position markings would be. The distance between the runway hold position markings and 36L is a bit of a distance; which I was not expecting. So I had some expectation bias because I was looking past" where the runway hold position markings were in reality and I was looking for them where I thought they would be.Recommendations: My concern today and the reason for this report is potential encroachment of the runway hold position line and how an airport maintenance crew can alleviate one of the contributing factors to this situation. I suspect that others might get visually tricked with these faded runway hold position markings. I recommend painting the runway hold position markings so they stick out like a sore thumb. Also; I think the grass should be removed from the concrete. Due to the grass growing on it; the taxiway reminded me more of a taxiway that had been permanently closed rather than in use. With the distance between the runway hold position markings and 36L; the grass growing on the taxiway; and the faded paint of the runway hold position markings; it was very easy for me to look ahead to an area where I expected the runway hold markings to be and think the actual runway hold markings were old and out-of-use markings. Perhaps by the time someone reads this; maintenance crews will have already remedied my concern by repainting the lines and getting rid of the grass on the taxiway."
