Synopsis
SR22 Pilot reported wrong airport identified on visual approach resulted in ATC assistance; low altitude alert and CFTT event.
Narrative
I was in route from ZZZ1 direct to ZZZ. ATC told me to expect RNAV XX at ZZZ. I loaded the RNAV XX approach correctly with vectors. As I descended; I was going through a layer of clouds. Tower asked if I had the field. As I was responding; I came out of the could layer around 3;000 MSL; and I told Tower I had the field in sight. Tower asked me to report a 5 mile right base. My GPS stated I was 8 miles from the field. However; visually; the field looked much closer. I flew a right base and lined up for final approach; and told Tower my position. Tower asked if I was at the correct field; and told me my altitude was low. It was then that I realized I was at the wrong airport and executed a missed approach. I was on a short final at ZZZ2; 6NM N/NE from my destination ZZZ. Both airports have a RWY XX and crossing runways. Tower provided me a heading south to the correct airport. The issue was 100% pilot error. I did not reference my nav systems once coming out of the clouds to verify I was lining up for the correct airport and visual approach.
