Synopsis
Corporate jet Captain reported a lack of taxiway signage and unfamiliarity with the HND airport resulted in a possible pilot deviation.
Narrative
On taxi clearance request from West Ramp; out of sight from Tower; we were instructed to start taxi and Ground would give taxi clearance once they had visual on us. We taxied around several cones and aircraft to about 250 ft. from Taxiway A. As we slowed; the taxi clearance was given to taxi to [Runway] 17R via [Taxiway] Hotel." As we neared Taxiway Alpha; we could see Taxiway Hotel to our left but Hotel appeared to be a perpendicular taxiway at runway end to taxi onto Runway 17R. There was a paved area that appears to be a service road and not a taxiway. There aren't any clear markings that indicate it is a "ramp" taxiway or any kind of taxiway that was able to handle our weight; 70;000 lb. We conversed that they must have instructed us to use Alpha to get to Hotel - in hindsight; we should have requested clarification. The second we turned onto Alpha they requested to call them for possible pilot deviation. It was a quiet day; we were 1 of 2 aircraft talking to Ground Control; although we didn't see the other aircraft anywhere. We taxied slow and cautious as we haven't been to HND often and the taxiway signage didn't seem well placed for a taxiway "hotspot." At no time was any aircraft; person; or vehicle in danger. We are a very experienced crew and know we should have asked for clarification. But; given the visual clues; i.e.; ramp; signage; pavement etc.; we would have been hesitant to taxi via the ramp that appeared to be a service road. This is an area that really needs better signage or Ground Control needs to issue a clearance that better fits the poor signage. In the future; we will just go to LAS. Despite a busier airport; the airport and control seem to be better suited to handle an aircraft our size."
