Synopsis
PC-12 flight crew reported a runway incursion at a non-towered airport.
Narrative
I was PM and sitting right seat; operating radios and communications. Talking on Center; Monitoring CTAF at ZZZ airport ; holding for release ; #1 Runway XX ; approximately 25 min at this position as there were many IFR aircraft departing and inbound at this time. Aircraft inbound canceled IFR in the air; Atc Controller accepted cancellation; and advised them that a Pilatis would be departing IFR ahead of them; the inbound aircraft acknowledged with 'will be looking '. Atc immediately cleared us for departure with a 3 minute void time. I acknowledged the clearance; told the PF (who was also able to hear all radio transmissions) 'we are cleared to depart '. I looked toward final as we took the runway; and did not see an aircraft on final; the PF said he was able to see them and we had room/time to depart. He continued and I announced on ctaf that we were departing XX. Shortly after the inbound plane came on Freq and something to the effect of 'we are on short final' we said we would takeoff without delay. They responded 'do not take off I am above you' I called abort takeoff and the PF immediately aborted take off; slowed the plane and exited the runway at the next taxi way. It was at that time the inbound plane overflew us making a left turn to join the downwind. I announced we were clear of the runway and taxing to the departure end of XX. Then switched back to ATC and told them what had happened. They gave me a Supervisor number to call; which I called while sitting there in line to depart. I gave them our side of the story and that was the end of it. After some more departing and arriving IFR traffic ; ATC re-cleared us to depart and we departed and flew back to home base ZZZ1 without issue .I believe there were things all 3 parties; (US; ATC; Aircraft inbound) could have done differently. While I cannot speak for them only myself . My take away is that we should have slowed down and made double sure we could have taken the runway and made our departure without causing the inbound aircraft to feel they needed to go around.
Second reporter narrative
I was the pilot flying holding short number one in line to depart Runway XX at ZZZ with a hold for release. ATC was busy with several inbound aircraft and informed us we would have a wait. I heard ATC requesting aircraft to slow and giving holding instructions. I heard an aircraft not wanting to hold. I also heard ATC clear the aircraft we were to follow cleared the RNAV XX. There was a discussion between the aircraft and ATC about which approach was cleared as the aircraft had the ILS loaded and wanted to continue with that. The aircraft on approach cancelled IFR airborne and said they had the airport in sight. I saw an aircraft on long final out past the towers on the XX approach end. I told the pilot monitoring I saw the aircraft and pointed it out. ATC informed the aircraft they would be releasing a Pilatus ahead of them. I heard the aircraft reply they would be looking for it. I did not hear the aircraft making calls on CTAF. We received our departure clearance with a three minute cancellation time. The pilot monitoring acknowledged and said; OK; lets go. I asked if we had time and he replied lets go. I advanced onto the runway after he called on CTAF that we were departing Runway XX and accelerated while on the centerline. I then heard the aircraft on Approach say 'Pilatus departing I'm right behind you.' Pilot monitoring replied we are about to rotate. The aircraft ordered us to stay on the ground that it was over us. The pilot monitoring said abort as I was starting the abort. We braked straight ahead exiting at the first practical taxiway. I saw the aircraft turning left at the highest altitude of the circle maneuver it made coming around to land XX. The pilot monitoring radioed clear of the runway on ctaf. I heard the aircraft telling us something about what we did wrong on ctaf as the pilot monitoring went to ATC and let them know we aborted the departure causing a go around. ATC gave us a phone number to call and PM did so.The pilot monitoring and the pilot flying had a debriefing and agreed there were things all party's involved could have done differently. As the pilot flying I will give more diligence to the approach end of the runway on entering the runway relying less on the pilot monitoring. I will also remember that if things are seeming rushed to slow down the situation and error on the side of caution. An overlying stressor was the insistence on everyone's part involved to get things going which led to communication and situational breakdown. In the end the aircraft on approach made a good call to go around and we made a solid decision to abort. There was not I believe any intention from anyone involved to do unsafe actions or cause anyone grief.
