Synopsis
DA-40 Flight Instructor reported a braking malfunction during landing on a training flight. The instructor aborted the landing and diverted to an alternate airport with a longer runway and landed with partial braking.
Narrative
Loss of braking at ZZZ [airport] in Aircraft X. Preflight and taxi brake check completed without any issues. Takeoff and landing for first four laps at ZZZ not an issue. Nothing out of the ordinary. Came in for a full stop taxi back; SP (student pilot) landed and got on brakes without any braking force; full to the floor. IP (Flight Instructor) took controls and co-pilot brakes went full to the floor. IP pumped the brakes; and left brake worked a little. Airplane started veering left at 50 KIAS ish. IP was unable to maintain directional control and slow down; so initiated go around. IP let go of brakes; and went full right rudder; rotated at 67 without running off the runway and departed via departure leg RWY XX. In the air; IP cycled parking brake; and pumped brakes multiple times on pilot and co-pilot side; still to the floor; but by the end had a little resistance. IP chose to return to ZZZ1 [airport] for a longer runway in case brakes were still fully failed. IP [advised ATC] inbound and landed full flaps on ZZZ1 RWY XY. IP had about 30% braking pressure upon landing; so could slow down; but not much resistance still. Taxied slowly to the ramp and shut down. IP squawked the plane.
