Synopsis
C172 pilot reported a temporary loss of engine power and diversion to a nearby airport.
Narrative
I was cruising on the return leg of a cross country flight back to ZZZ. However at 2;500 ft about 6 miles from ZZZ1; the aircraft had a momentary loss of power; down to about idle RPMS; for a full second or two. I felt the airplane sort of jerk when this happened; but the engine power came right back. I immediately pushed the mixture full in; (as it was lean for cruise) and alerted Center we had some engine stutter and that we needed to go to ZZZ1. I was turning towards the airport and trying to climb as much as I could to try to achieve as much range as possible; as I did not know how long the engine was going to continue functioning. Center then gave me the frequency for tower and I was talking to tower. Tower cleared me to land Runway XX and even turned up the lights for me which was helpful. I came into the airport very high of course; and utilized a slip to get me down to the approach altitude I needed. I then bled off airspeed on short final and deployed two notches of flaps to get slowed down for landing. I taxied off the runway at the first available taxiway and asked for a progressive taxi which tower was willing to grant me. I however smelled some burning metal smell or smoke of sorts that was not the normal exhaust smell we often smell as pilots. I alerted tower about this and shut down the aircraft; they sent the fire department to take a look and they could smell the smell I was mentioning and described it as a 'burning metal smell'. However; no visible smoke or fire was present. The aircraft was then tugged to FBO.
