Synopsis

Recreational / Hobbyist UAS pilot reported flying in controlled airspace without LAANC authorization.

Narrative

On Day 0 I flew my new drone for the first time in the immediate vicinity of my house around XA:30 local time in order to practice learning how to fly it. Prior to this first flight; I had already registered it with the FAA; verified it was remote ID compliant; and received the TRUST certificate. I used the B4UFLY site to check the local airspace where I saw I could go up to 300'. I live inside the Class Charlie airspace of SNA (I am about 4.5 miles from the airport). I was unaware that I needed LAANC approval still even when flying below the airspace limitation shown. I inadvertently flew the drone around my house inside airspace; not realizing I needed LAANC authorization. After doing further research; I realized my mistake and wanted to submit this form in order to establish I accidentally flew my drone inside airspace. I will be doing everything I can to fully educate myself to fully comply with all rules and regulations. Moving forward I will make sure to always get LAANC authorization.I believe that there could be better training on the steps required to get LAANC authorization in order to prevent the mistake I made. As a new drone pilot; it was confusing seeing the 300' altitude and led me to believe I was cleared to fly as long as I remained below that.
