Synopsis

Part 107 UAS pilot reported they flew in controlled airspaced without LAANC authorization. Reporter stated they requested authorization well in advance of the flight but did not obtain it.

Narrative

I was performing a demo for a hotel that I am planning on cleaning using a drone around XA:30AM on Day 0. I placed a request through Drone Zone FAA for airspace authorization in this area roughly a week before the demo was scheduled to occur. However; the request was not processed in that time. The morning of the demo I communicated my inability to get airspace clearance to the hotel owner and that I would be unable to complete the demo in full. They requested I just take off and show the drone taking off and briefly flying just so they could see it. I acquiesced to this and took off and flew up roughly 10 ft off the ground for about 30 seconds or so then brought the drone back down safely with no issues. There was no issue with any nearby air traffic near the airport but in hindsight I was thinking that the flight was most likely still flagged by the remote ID system. I wished to report this matter and express my apologies for a lapse in judgement in this moment. I will not perform any unauthorized flights going forward.

NASA callback

The reporter stated that even with 6 weeks of lead time they were unable to obtain authorization via the FAA Drone zone. Even when placing multiple requests they received no response from the FAA.
