Synopsis
Flight Instructor reported they and their student neglected to check NOTAMs about UAS operations at destination airport and failed to fly the correct traffic pattern as advised in the NOTAMs.
Narrative
During a regular training flight for a student pilot on cross-country procedures; the student and I were flying from ZZZ1 to ZZZ. The student had prepared flight planning materials and I was supervising his cross-country navigation procedures and planning. During our descent into ZZZ he briefed left traffic for runway XX. He joined a normal left traffic pattern and did a touch and go on runway XX. Upon taking off again; we had noticed several UAS aircraft flying around the airport. Over potential safety concerns; I checked NOTAM's to see if there was anything that specified UAS operations near ZZZ. We realized that NOTAMs had called for right traffic on ZZZ due to the UAS operations. No traffic conflict occurred between us and the UAS traffic; however it was concerning to me that despite a current NOTAM for right traffic on runway XX; we had conducted left traffic over the UAS area. Upon departure we ensured that we climbed to a safe altitude on an extended upwind to stay away from their operations. While there was no immediate threat to safety for anyone involved; it made an excellent teaching point for us both on the importance of verifying NOTAM information.
