Synopsis
General aviation pilot reported a NMAC on final approach with an aircraft on final approach to the opposite end of the runway. Reporter took evasive action to avoid a collision.
Narrative
The flyby to complete my first leg of an air race had been completed to the side of Runway XX at XXXX feet MSL as per the race instructions. I exited the area to the designated position as per instructions and prepared to make my landing when all aircraft were clear of the area. There was much confusion regarding runways as one runway was XXX degrees and the other was XXY degrees. There were many aircraft in the area at a low level either completing a flyby or preparing to takeoff on Runway XX. I was preparing to land on Runway XX when a racer stated they were on final approach to Runway XY. I took evasive action and made a sharp turn to the left as there were aircraft to the right completing the flyby; and flew out several miles leaving the area as there were many local and race aircraft either coming or going for me to make a safe approach to landing. Radio calls were being obliterated by several transmissions and CTAF on the same frequency. I eventually joined the final approach to Runway XY which the winds were favoring at the time and landed safely without incident. I did not have the tail number of the opposing aircraft.
