Synopsis
Helicopter pilot on a training flight reported an NMAC with a light aircraft on approach to IJD.
Narrative
Training flight on IFR flight plan. Aircraft was cleared direct ORW VOR at 3000ft for teardrop entry for procedure turn for the VOR A approach into IJD. Aircraft was communicating with Providence Approach. Aircraft crossed ORW and conducted a teardrop entry to a heading of 135 for 1 minute outbound. Approximately 30 seconds after crossing VOR; Providence Approach advised aircraft that there was traffic at 12 o'clock same altitude opposite direction type unknown. Pilot in Command responded 'searching'. Approximately 15 seconds later PIC identified a small GA aircraft same altitude converging. PIC took controls and performed max performance cyclic climbing right turn while advising ATC that '[We have] traffic in sight; very close; deviating'. Lateral separation was 200ft or less. GA aircraft did not respond nor deviate course at all. [We] requested to remain in hold and a climb to 4000ft while we attempted to develop the situation of the GA aircraft with ATC guidance. Providence kept [us] apprised of GA aircraft's activity. GA aircraft remained at 3000ft and orbited around the ORW VOR for approximately 5 minutes and then departed the area. Once the GA aircraft was clear [we] conducted the VOR A approach into IJD with no further issues.
