B737 Captain reported encountering wake turbulence on descent into BOS in trail of a B737.
Synopsis
B737 Captain reported encountering wake turbulence on descent into BOS in trail of a B737.
Narrative
While descending through approximately 14000 ft. on the JFUND Arrival we began to experience some uncommanded rolling motion. Suspecting wake the PM queried ATC as to our preceding traffic. It was a B737 8 miles ahead. We had a 13-knot quartering tailwind at the time which we believe exacerbated the coming roll. Immediately after talking to ATC; we experienced another roll that was more drastic than the first and that exceeded the autopilot's roll authority; at which point I disconnected the autopilot and flew the aircraft. Until we were able to get a vector off the arrival and out of the wake - approximately 1 minute - at which point I reconnected the autopilot and the flight concluded without further incident. At no point did the aircraft exceed its normal bank angle; no bank angle aural; and all were seated as we were below 18000 ft. and the cabin had been prepared for landing. The PM stated that he was ready to call an 'upset' but we returned to normal flight so quickly there was no need.
NASA callback
Reporter stated this was a 'near-upset' scenario.
