Synopsis
A Balloon pilot reported they landed on airport property close to a departing jet. When they attempted to launch out of the way jet blast from the departing aircraft caused a temporary loss of control.
Narrative
LTA (Lighter Than Air) flight operated south and or southeast of Runway XX for nearly an hour. Operating between surface and about 7;000 MSL. In constant communication with traffic in area on XXX.X. Descended southeast of XX to catch wind away from XX and to remain clear of approach/departure. Wind changed and decided to land within airport property. Landed approximately 300 yards from XX; at about a 30 degree angle to the south from end of pavement. More in line with Taxiway than Runway XX but closer to approach/departure than I should have been. Falcon jet preparing to take off. Had cleared their departure and announced intention. We were in communication. Believe they took off on time and as scheduled; and that I did not impede their flight but still should not have been where I was and am certain I created confusion for the departing jet pilot. To avoid jet wash I added heat to balloon to get up and out of the way. Jet wash did affect balloon and made for a rough take off. Basket/Gondola scraped across mowed field while ascending. Did not hit any other obstacles. Did not damage any equipment; did not result in any injury. Good example of little balloons need to stay away from big jets. In future flights will ensure I remain far clear of departure and approach. Will also use the experience as I communicate with other LTA pilots frequently operating in the area.
