Government UAS pilot reported operating a medium UAS without the proper waivers.
Synopsis
Government UAS pilot reported operating a medium UAS without the proper waivers.
Narrative
I operated a drone greater than 55lbs without the proper waiver/permissions. I am a member of my local Search and Rescue (SAR) team where I operate as a sUAS pilot. We deploy drones on just about every callout and have been very successful in saving lives. We have been so successful that we got the attention of the drone manufacturer. The Drone manufacturer reached out to us to ask if we would be willing to test their delivery drone; as a SAR asset. We of course accepted and the manufacturer shipped us a Demo unit. With all the excitement of the new drone showing up; our Sheriff setup a demo for a few of the commissioners. We conducted this demo at a trailhead in the foothills of the mountains. I flew the drone up to 100' AGL and performed a quick demo of the winch system and it was conducted in VMC and in Class G airspace. I have hence learned that I flew the drone illegally and without the proper waiver that is needed. With my years of aviation experience I know that regulations are there to ensure the safe operation of aircraft and should have been more diligent to operate appropriately. I will not fly the drone again until I have the proper permission to do so and will be more diligent in the future to ensure all regulations are followed.
