Helicopter pilot reported a bird strike that resulted in a forced off field landing.
Synopsis
Helicopter pilot reported a bird strike that resulted in a forced off field landing.
Narrative
Incident occurred enroute from ZZZ1. A loud pop/ bang was heard while transitioning from late climb out and starting to level off. This loud bang was accompanied by a partial loss in power; erratic Turbine Outlet Temperature (TOT); uncommanded yaw; and very loud metallic screeching. These characteristics mostly fit the description of a compressor stall/surge. Upon recognition of this; I reduced power; checked gauges for confirmed power output; and opted for an immediate landing. A field next to a Fire Station was available several hundred yards ahead and within the powered glide slope. I informed operations; and rapidly descended into a minimum power landing to a flat portion of the field. Upon inspection; feathers and smattered blood were found in and around the inlet. Doves were seen earlier; at a distance; during climb out. No birds were observed at the time of the incident. Operations; Maintenance Control; Base Mechanic; and Company were informed. Aircraft was secured; location relayed; and sensitive items were taken back to base with the crew. No Injuries were sustained. No other damage was observed to the aircraft.
