Synopsis

Recreational / Hobbyist UAS pilot reported flying in controlled airspace without LAANC authorization.

Narrative

I flew my drone without requesting LAANC authorization. I am visiting the area and was very excited to find spots to fly for recreational purposes as the natural beauty of the area is so appealing. While I had checked air space maps and apps before venturing out to the area; I thought that I was just outside the range of controlled airspace and therefore was not required to request LAANC approval. It has also been some time since I have flown and was not in the habit of making sure to obtain the necessary approvals and even though any request would have likely been auto approved I probably mistook that to mean it was not required to request. Again; I thought I was just outside the area needing approval. The drone remote did not give me any issue taking off so I thought I was in the clear. After planning for other flight locations and checking the maps I realized that I probably was required to request approval for this flight. As soon as I realized I may have flown without approval I went to the internet to see what steps I should take as I value being able to fly my drone recreationally and generally am very aware of the safety requirements and adherence to regulations to ensure proper compliance with regulations. In the future I will check multiple apps and sources of controlled airspace maps to ensure I am requesting LAANC when required and be sure to make the request as required for each flight I do.
