Synopsis

B767 pilot reported the ground crew was marshaling them to the wrong parking line at the gate which could have resulted in the aircraft coming in contact with a building.

Narrative

After we stopped the aircraft at Spot XX and completed the tow-in supplemental procedure; normal communication was established with the ground crew. Tow-in commenced according to SOP. During tow-in; a separate person with ramp group came driving in front of our aircraft and pointed to the solid line. We in the flight deck questioned this amongst ourselves. The tow-in crew began adjusting for the solid line and it became clear to us that contact was going to occur with the adjacent building had we continued to let the ground crew head towards the solid line. I communicated on headset that they appeared to be lining up with the wrong line; we needed the original line; the dashed line. The tug operator agreed and adjusted back; but not before getting stuck in an awkward position that the tug operator had to skillfully correct. Whoever came roaring out on a tug to redirect our tow-in crew was wrong. I understand that Gate XX is a recent addition to the widebody operation; but this could have led to contact with the building to the right of the safe area.
