Narrative

DEPARTED LVK FOR FLT TO HARRIS RANCH FOR LUNCH AND FUEL. PAX SUGGESTED TO GO 'ARPT VISITING' TO SANTA PAULA ARPT WHERE MANY OLD AND INTERESTING ACFT ARE BASED. WE DEPARTED HDG SE FOR SANTA PAULA ARPT. APPROX 30 MI OUT; TRIED TO CONTACT SANTA BARBARA FSS SEVERAL TIMES ON 122.2 AND 123.65 OVER A 5 MIN TIME PERIOD WITH NO RESPONSE. CAME OVER MOUNTAINS ON STEEP DSCNT TO ARRIVE OVER ARPT APPROX AT 3000 FT NOTICING WIND DIRECTION AND OBSTACLES (MOUNTAINS WHICH PARALLEL RWY APPROX 1-2 MI AWAY) THUS KEEPING ATTN ON HAVING ENOUGH DISTANCE FROM RWY FOR AN APPROPRIATE DOWNWIND AND YET ENOUGH CLRNC FROM MOUNTAINS. DURING ENTRY INTO ARPT AREA; TFC PATTERN; DOWNWIND; BASE; AND BASE TO FINAL; CALLED REPEATEDLY ON UNICOM 122.9 WITH NO RESPONSE. WHEN ON FINAL; NOTICED A JET WARBIRD TYPE ACFT OVERTAKING US FROM DIRECTLY ABOVE US WITH FLAPS AND GEAR DOWN. AS ACFT DSNDED IN FRONT OF US; WE RECEIVED WAKE TURB AND DECIDED TO ABORT THE LNDG. DURING THE CLBOUT WE NOTICED AN ASSEMBLANCE OF PEOPLE -- APPARENTLY AN AIR SHOW. WE DEPARTED THE AREA AND RETURNED TO LVK. I BELIEVE THAT THE PRIMARY CAUSE FOR THIS INCIDENT WAS BOTH MY INABILITY TO CONTACT SANTA BARBARA FSS; AND THAT NO ONE WAS MONITORING THE PUBLISHED UNICOM FREQ DURING THE AIR SHOW ACTIVITY; WHICH WAS APPARENT BY THE JET'S ACTIVITY; AS IT WAS OBVIOUS HE HAD NO KNOWLEDGE OF OUR PRESENCE.
