Synopsis
B767-300 crew reported a loss of center hydraulic system quantity during cruise flight. Crew diverted after performing checklists for quantity loss.
Narrative
Aircraft was in level flight at FL390 over the ZZZ VOR. EICAS MSG C HYD QTY". Center hydraulic system pressure indicated normal; but center system quantity indicated .47 and falling. QRH accomplished.Crew requested phone patch with Dispatch. Communication quality of the connection was poor at best. Crew advised Maintenance of continuing loss of fluid quantity. Quantity decreased from .47 to .30 while on the phone patch. Through broken communications; Maintenance recommendations were for a precautionary landing at ZZZ; the closest suitable airport.[Request for priority handling] with ZZZ Center. Captain took over duties of PF and initiated an ATC descent into ZZZ. Operations gave current updated weather. As part of Captain's preflight setup; the weather and NOTAMS had been downloaded to JeppView for possible enroute diversionary airports prior to departure. On descent into ZZZ; C HYD QTY stabilized at approximately .12rf. EICAS msg "C HYD SYS PRESS" illuminated intermittently. QRH accomplished with Air Demand Pump restoring system pressure.Flap and gear extension were made early in anticipation of C HYD failure. Crew decided; for safety; to utilize Flaps 20 for landing in the event of a go around in anticipation of a total C HYD system failure. Flap and gear extension were both slower than normal. Aircraft landed on Runway XX at ZZZ without incident. Aircraft was able to turn off the runway and taxi to the ramp under its own power.Upon exterior inspection; large portions of the tail were coated in hydraulic fluid.Bridging aircraft always brings a period in which numerous maintenance issues arise. The improvements may need to be on the maintenance facilities procedures and quality control."
Second reporter narrative
FL390 over ZZZ VOR. EICAS MSG C HYD QTY". Quantity was at .47 and falling and the pressure was indicating normal. We proceeded to accomplish the QRH. Crew got in touch with Maintenance and were advised to divert to ZZZ. Center Hydraulic quantity was at .30 communications with Maintenance ended. We Received the current weather update from Operations. We [requested priority handling] with ZZZ Center and were vectored for a descent in to ZZZ. During the decent the Center Hydraulic Quantity stabilized at .12. We accomplish another QRH for intermittent message C HYD SYS PRESS and was accomplished with Company program. We accomplished the landing checklist with Gear down and Flaps 20. Unusually delay was noticed when extending flaps and landing gear.Safe landing was accomplished we were able to taxi to parking. Suggestion: Fix the airplanes."
