Synopsis
Air carrier flight crew reported that while on final approach they were instructed by ATC to go-around due to another aircraft wasn't clear of the runway.
Narrative
During Aircraft X (ZZZ to DFW) the set-up; approach briefing; and checklists were completed for the ILS runway 17C at DFW. ATIS specifically published: 'NOTAMs Taxiway M closed south of A. 17C arrivals expect left turn at taxiway P2.'On final (outside of JIFFY); DFW tower cleared the aircraft (an air carrier aircraft) in front of us to land 17C and expect exit at P2. Approaching JIFFY; DFW tower cleared us to land 17C and expect exit at P2. The air carrier aircraft landed and seemed to quickly slow between EJ and M3. DFW tower further instructed them to turn 'right' for taxiway 'M.' The air carrier aircraft seemed to have difficulty understanding the instructions and hesitated turning on M3; and slowly continued to M4. At about 400 feet (AGL); DFW tower directed us to 'go-around' due to the air carrier aircraft still on the runway and slow taxi to exit the runway. We executed the go-around procedures; complied with altitude instructions to level at 2;000 feet; reset and re-briefed for the ILS 17C; completed all pertinent checklists; advised the flight attendants and passengers over PA; completed an uneventful landing to runway 17C; and exited at P2! 1) Aircrew ATIS and tower instruction compliance and understanding--aircrew arriving into DFW must obtain; read; and understand ATIS and tower instructions. ATIS published: '17C arrivals expect left turn at taxiway P2;' and tower instructed to expect exit at P2. Air carrier aircraft on runway 17C slowed down between EJ and M3; hesitated turning on M3; and stayed on the runway slowly turning for M4. 2) Aircrew situational awareness while on an active runway--aircrew arriving into DFW must understand dynamic construction patterns; ATIS stated exit for 17C; and tower expected exit turn P2. The air carrier aircraft seemed to slow down for a right turn-off; but hesitated turning on M3; and stayed on the runway slowly turning for M4.
