Synopsis
Recreational / Hobbyist UAS pilot reported someone shooting a firearm at their UAS during cruise flight. The reporter had to briefly fly past visual line of sight to land from another direction.
Narrative
On Day 0; I operated my drone under LAANC Authorization; valid from XA:30 PM to XB:30 PM; with a maximum altitude of 400 feet. I launched the drone from the backyard; at XA:34:48 PM. Approximately one minute later; while flying about 150 feet from the launch point; I heard a single gunshot around XA:35 PM.To determine if someone in the group had fired that single shot at my drone; I gazed at the feed on my screen. I noticed a group of individuals in a vacant lot behind; also about 150 feet below my drone. This group was pointing and filming my drone while interacting with someone in the gangway and rear porch of Location A and Location B; which share a rear gangway. While assessing the situation; I saw two males leave the rear porch of Location A and head toward the alley. One of them appeared to be carrying a firearm. Moments later; at XA:37 PM; I heard approximately 10-15 gunshots; confirming they were indeed attempting to strike my drone.Due to the nature of the emergency; I had to temporarily fly the drone beyond my visual line of sight; relying on the video feed from my remote control. For safety reasons; I did not return directly to my launch point; choosing to circle around the front of my starting location and approach from the east to land. The entire flight lasted 3 minutes and 43 seconds; and the incident was recorded. Both flight logs and the related video have been preserved.Police calls from the area reported between 20 and 50 shots fired during my flight. The altitude mentioned in this report is approximate AGL. While I have actual altitude and distance logs; I do not have them on hand at this moment. My total flight time across all UAS models is approximately 50-60 hours; with around 25-30 hours on the specific UAS involved. In the last 90 days; I have logged approximately 18 hours across all UAS models.
