Synopsis

Aircraft pilot reported while attempting to extend the gear not observing the gear resulting in the pilot diverting to their home airport. The pilot landed in the grass at the approach end of the runway resulting in aircraft damage.

Narrative

Flying Aircraft X; an M22 E-LSA from ZZZ to ZZZ1 and back. I called to ZZZ Tower for landing and was told to report a 4 mile final. I put the landing gear handle down and did not observe an extended gear. I made 2 circuit in the pattern while asking the ZZZ Tower if my wheels were down. I contemplated landing on the grass at ZZZ and I believe the Tower asked souls onboard and mentioned something about emergency equipment. I said I would return to ZZZ for landing. Wanting to not deal with Emergency personnel I hurried to land on the grass at the approach end of Runway XX at ZZZ. I put 2 notch of flaps and with 300 feet to landing; I had a higher than expected sink rate. I was not observing my airspeed and I attempted to arrest the sink with power. The terrain was sloping uphill to the approach end of the runway and I made a harder than expect contact in a landing attitude bounced a contact the grass. The right water float entered a rough area of grass and I stopped in approximated 300 feet. I observed that the right float had broken away as designed but it had placed a 1 foot hole in the right wing fabric. Both floats had broken away. My telephone which was on the passenger seat ended up in front of my feet and as I was trying to retrieve it; it announced that if I did not respond in 5 seconds it would send out a crash report; which it did. EMT and local police showed up. I was attempting to shut of the fuel and was told by the officer to touch nothing. I refused medical attention. The M22 has had micro switch failure for the landing gear in other aircraft and the aircraft is usually landed on the water. Due to time of day and having landed an L250 without incident; I chose my home airport and grass. Failure to use full flaps and observe my speed resulted in this incident.
