Synopsis
Air Carrier flight crew reported while holding short of a taxiway an aircraft exiting runway near them stopped due to insufficient wingtip clearance. This aircraft had not yet cleared the runway; resulting in a go around of another aircraft.
Narrative
We had just landed Runway 31 in LGA. We taxied clear of the runway and checked in with Ground. Ground was very busy and told us to taxi B short of K. We taxied and held short of Taxiway K. We contacted Ramp and received our new gate and entry. As we waited to let Ground know. We noticed an Aircraft Y slowing and start to turn left onto Taxiway J. It didn't seem like there was enough room for the aircraft to pass behind us. Luckily; the Aircraft Y stopped as we tried to taxi up a bit. However; the aircraft landing on 31 behind Aircraft Y needed to go around. Ground then gave us taxi instructions to move up and head toward the ramp. No further incident. It was dark outside and we probably were hard to see for the Aircraft Y. They were most likely rushing to get off the runway for the landing traffic behind them. We had just shut down an engine so we had some difficulty moving the aircraft out of the way. Obviously; an aircraft exiting an active runway has priority. However; we had been sitting there for a few minutes; and I let my guard down. We had a long day and I was feeling pretty tired. Normally; I believe the landing aircraft would see the taxiways blocked and roll down to the next taxiway; or Tower would normally call the exit point. However; this evening they committed to Taxiway J which came in close proximity to us. I should have started moving earlier; but the event happened so quickly it took me some time to process that we needed to move. Complacency and fatigue contributed to this event. Suggestions: I feel holding short of L would have been a better option to allow aircraft to exit safely on any of the high-speed taxiways. Had I paid more attention I maybe could has seen the issue coming and moved up out of the way quickly.
Second reporter narrative
After landing on Runway 31 in LGA; we exited the runway at Taxiway S; and was told to taxi via B and hold short of K; while we waited for aircraft to taxi out of the ramp so we can enter. An Aircraft Y landed on Runway 31 and was exiting on J; and they came to a stop prior to clearing the active runway because they were unsure of the wingtip separation and caused a go around of another aircraft. Suggestions: Maybe ATC should not have aircraft hold on B short of K when landing 31; in case aircraft exit on J; it seems to close and aircraft will be unsure of proper wingtip separation.
