Synopsis

EMB-175 flight crew reported the ground personnel informed them of a fuel leak on the #1 engine. Maintenance came out to the aircraft; pulled the fire extinguisher handle and as the Captain entered the flight deck they hit their head on the handle and discharged the fire extinguisher.

Narrative

During the preflight/pre-departure phase of the flight at Gate 1 in ZZZ; ground operations informed me that Engine 1 was leaking fuel from the bottom. I proceeded to contact maintenance and made the appropriate entry in the maintenance logbook. When maintenance arrived at the aircraft; they pulled the Engine 1 fire extinguisher handle to stop the fuel leakage. While this was happening; I went to the terminal to speak with the gate agents and coordinate passenger services and any necessary actions due to the delay. When I returned to the ramp; maintenance informed me that an idle engine run would be required. I went to the cockpit to inform the first officer and request clearance from ATC.As I was entering my seat; I accidentally hit my head on the already-pulled Fire Extinguisher Handle of Engine 1; causing the bottle to discharge. I immediately returned the handle to the neutral position. After the bottle was discharged; I was instructed by maintenance personnel to create a new entry in the maintenance logbook.

Second reporter narrative

Approximately 15 prior to pushing of flight in Aircraft X we were made aware by ramp personnel of a leaking engine 1 from the lower drain. We confirmed this observation and the captain performed the appropriate write up. Maintenance personnel appeared and quickly pulled the overhead shut off handle then verified the leak. While outside; mx informed the captain that the procedure would be to start the engine at the gate and that would hopefully reset any potential leaking valve. When the captain returned to the cockpit to make arrangements; upon leaning down; he accidentally hit the extinguisher handle with his head just enough to discharge the halon but not enough to re-engage the light. Upon realizing what happened; the captain apologized and exited the cockpit to confirm with maintenance. The fuel leak was not resolved and continued leaking to which point the fire department was brought over to monitor the spread of the leak.
