Narrative
I was taking off from the ZZZ airport on runway XX. A helicopter was practicing pattern work. I made sure I ascertained the location of the aircraft before I made my announcement that I was ready for takeoff. The helicopter acknowledged my call and made what I assumed was a call to let airport traffic know that he was staying in the pattern. He apparently must have stated that he was at the approach end of the runway. I either didn't hear this call correctly or I didn't understand that he was hovering at the approach end of runway XY. I was leaving on runway XX. As I moved into takeoff position I did not expect him to continue to be sitting at the approach end of runway XY. As I began my takeoff roll; I could not see the helicopter at the opposite end of the runway due to a slight crown on the runway that kept him obscured. As I came up over the crest of the short slope in the runway I could see him in the distance; but not close enough to make a difference in terms of my departure or so I thought until he made another call to say he was getting ready to leave and that he would be staying in the pattern. As I climbed up and heard this; I immediately got on the radio and told him that I would be go over him. In other words hold off a minute while I pass overhead. From what I can tell he never started his climb and there was never any danger of a collision because he heard me say I was passing overhead and he held off until I was well outside the pattern.
