A319 Captain reported landing safely after receiving an ECAM message for a nose wheel steering fault.
Synopsis
A319 Captain reported landing safely after receiving an ECAM message for a nose wheel steering fault.
Narrative
Approaching the FAF at around 7;000 feet on the RNAV XX into ZZZ; First Officer requested the gear down. We were notified via the ECAM system of a Wheel N/W STRG Fault. As we were unsure of the current status of our steering ability upon landing; we elected to go-around to work the issue. FO assumed flying and radio duties while the Captain handled checklists; the coordination with Dispatch; ZZZ Operations; FAs and Cabin. We requested delay vectors from ZZZ Approach. We sent [Maintenance] a request for help with the indicated failure. We requested a 'call me' with Dispatch with the expectation to conference [Maintenance]. We were notified via ACARS that we were too low for an ARINC patch so subsequent communications were via ACARS. The checklist was actioned; but provided no fix as any reset attempt was to only be accomplished on the ground. The Central Fault Display System (CFDS) was referenced and it indicated a steering electro-HYD Module (6GC) failure. Our status page indicated N/W STRG was inoperative. After we were unable to fix; we relayed via Dispatch and a follow up call for confirmation with ZZZ operations; a need for a tow-in after landing as we would be unable to steer. Because our situation would result in the closing of our runway after landing and the possibility of steering trouble; we did [request assistance] via ZZZ Approach. We were confident we did not have an undesired deflection of the nose wheel as there was an absence of a L/G SHOCK ABSORBER FAULT ECAM.A [safety] briefing was accomplished with purser. No evacuation advisory or prep was ordered. Passengers were notified of our situation both after our go-around and again prior to landing once we had more information. We let them know of the possible emergency vehicle presence. The landing was uneventful with the aircraft stopping straight ahead on the runway. A 'Remain Seated; Remain Seated' command was issued after landing. After an all clear was issued following the inspection from Airport Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF); they left the scene and we waited for our tow crew to arrive which took about 10 minutes. After landing flows were accomplished and the engines were shut down. A tow was completed to gate.
