Synopsis

Part 107 UAS pilot reported they had a brief lost link with the UAS while it was in a hover. Pilot initiated a Return To Home and the UAS landed.

Narrative

The UAV operation is intended to film the halftime of a high school football game; the UAV is flying near people but is flown above a predetermined area where no participants are allowed to enter to comply with the no flying over people rule.During normal UAV operation; a low battery warning (battery < 20%) is shown on the iPhone connected to the DJI controller; the operator exits the application by pressing the home button to check the amount of battery left in the iPhone and to ensure that the controller is charging the phone; the UAV is hovering during the process. Upon completion of the battery check; the operator reopened the DJI Fly application; however; the application was unable to establish a connection with the UAV even though the phone was wired to the controller; and the controller had a connection to the UAV. The RPIC was notified of the situation and manually verified the connection to the UAV by manually manipulating the controls and observing that the UAV was responsive as well as because the UAV did not initiate an auto RTH as programed prior to flight if the command and control link is lost in order to comply with section 4 of the part 107 Certificate of Authorization (COA) requirements. The pilot then manually initiated an RTH by pressing and holding the RTH button and verified that the UAV had RTH and landed successfully. The operation is conducted under COA.
