Synopsis

Air carrier flight crew reported an engine failure on short final. The crew initiated a go-around procedure and diverted to an alternate airport for a safe landing.

Narrative

I am the pilot flying. On short final for Runway XX; we received an engine failure on our number 2 engine at approximately 300 ft. We both heard a loud bang (the sound was probably louder to me because it was the right engine). When I computed what the noise was; I remember pitching slightly up and saw 4 white on the papis. Immediately the Captain says; 'we lost our right engine; my aircraft go around toga' and commenced a missed. The aircraft remained in a stable condition on the go around and we decided to divert to ZZZ. After we cleaned up the aircraft; approach gave us a vector to ZZZ. The captain gave me the aircraft; finished the ecam actions and ran the QRH checklist. Approach gave us a long downwind while we completed checklist; loaded the approach into the FMS; and spoke to the passengers and flight attendants. The captain made sure I was in the green before accepting the landing clearance. We remembered to complete a descent checklist and before landing checklist. Once we safely landed with no further issues; maintenance took a look at our engine and said there was no fire or smoke. We taxied into the gate and deplaned all passengers.Cause: Include a briefing on a single engine go- around (saying call-outs aloud) for every single airport as part as the approach briefing.

Second reporter narrative

The FO was flying for Runway XX into ZZZ. While making the turn to short final and at approximately 300-400 feet we heard and felt a thump. As we tried to determine if it was a bird strike or something else we received multiple ECAMs with ENG2 FAIL as the final ECAM. The startle factor swallowed our descent a bit. When I saw our position relative to the runway I felt that we could not safely land. At that time I stated engine 2 fail; my aircraft; and TOGA GO AROUND". We executed the go around procedure and at approximately 600 feet I engaged the autopilot. At this point we had a second to take a breath and I mentally switched to what needed to be completed next. We were stable; climbing and things settled down. We leveled at 1000 agl; cleaned up on schedule. Once established in the climb we completed ECAM procedures as trained. (I will say; settling into training procedures allowed us to get back in the green and make all the necessary radio calls; F/A communications and passenger PAs.) After the ECAMs were complete I went into the QRH to review the ENG2 FAIL and non routine landing considerations. While I reviewed the QRH my F/O did a great job handling all the radio calls and completed the required changes in the MCDU (Multipurpose Display Control Unit). By the time all the procedures were accomplished we were on a downwind to runway XXL at ZZZ1. We paused here for a second to make sure we were both in the green. We were; and we proceeded to a normal landing. We stopped on the runway and had maintenance visually inspect the plane and engine for any damage; fire or fluid leakage. Nothing was found and we taxied to the gate.Cause: Not much to say here as we had an internal failure of the number 2 engine."
