Synopsis
B737 flight crew reported having a firm landing that resulted in a bounced landing. Flight crew recovered and continued landing roll.
Narrative
While on approach to ZZZ from ZZZ1; we were given a late Runway change while in descending on the arrival. We were given Runway XXR so as PM I changed the arrival for the different Runway and another descent checklist was performed. Weather seemed to be fine for the approach and the FO had proven to be able to land the 737 well when he flew it on a prior leg. While passing through the 50 ft callout the FO did not round out enough during the 30 foot callout. I grabbed the controls to assist on the round out and flare; however; it wasn't enough and a firm landing resulted with a slight bounce. I immediately stated that I had the aircraft and slowed it down to taxi speeds and taxied back to the gate without issue. We debriefed the landing and FO stated that he froze for a second as he sensed that we were closing in at a higher rate than normal and that he felt the controls were 'mushy'. It seemed with the high density altitude he did needed more in the rounding out of the aircraft and certainly more flare. I investigated the aircraft myself and did not notice any issues to the gear or any visible damage. When Maintenance had arrived for another issue on the plane I asked if he could have a look at the airplane gear as it was a rather firm landing. He made mention that Maintenance Control would have contacted him if it was a hard landing but that he would take a look
Second reporter narrative
During an approach to landing at ZZZ we experienced a hard landing. Everything from decent to the 500 ft point during the approach was standard. We were configured prior to the FAF and stable by 1000 ft. At around the 40 foot point prior to landing I experienced a loss of lift and an increased decent rate. Prior to this point we were on speed at flaps 30 VREF +5. I tried to arrest the decent by pulling back on the yoke but the control were mushy and the aircraft was slow to respond. This led to a very firm touchdown at which point the Captain took control of the aircraft and continue to landing roll. We taxied to park uneventfully after that. Once we parked at the gate the Captain did a walk around on the aircraft and did not note any damage. Maintenance also came to the flight deck to correct a write that we made during the flight. They told us that the aircraft did not report any malfunctions.
