MLG ASSIGNED VISUAL APCH AND ADVISED OF TFC FOR PARALLEL RWY OPPOSITE DIRECTION; BASE LEG ENTRY. TCASII GAVE CLB AS CREW SIGHTED ACFT. IT MADE STEEP TURN AND CONTINUED DSCNT BENEATH THEM.

Narrative

WE WERE ON A DSCNT FOR APCH TO RWY 17L; DFW WHEN CLRED TO 5000 FT AND GIVEN A TURN TO 270 DEG HDG. APPROX 1 1/2 MINS LATER; WE WERE GIVEN A 210 DEG HDG AND; A DSCNT TO 3000 FT AND ASKED IF RWY IN SIGHT. WE ACKNOWLEDGED AND WERE CLRED FOR VISUAL 17L WITH A 'CONTACT THE TWR' DIRECTION. CTLR THEN STATED; 'BEFORE YOU GO TO TWR; YOU HAVE TFC AT 1 O'CLOCK; 2 MI -- AN MLG R BASE FOR 18R.' I DO NOT RECALL THE EXACT WORDING. I LOOKED TO MY R AND DID NOT QUICKLY LOCATE THE TFC. I LOOKED AT TCASII; THEN OUTSIDE AGAIN AND SPOTTED IT. BY THE TIME I SIGHTED THE TFC; THE TCASII HAD GONE FROM 'TFC; TFC' TO 'CLB; CLB' WITH THE TFC APPROX 1/2 MI; SLIGHTLY BELOW (100-200 FT) OUR POS AND TURNING TO THE R. DURING THIS TIME; I HAD TURNED ONTO FINAL USING APPROX 15 DEG BANK TO ALIGN FOR CTRLINE. WE WERE AT APPROX 2600 FT AND DSNDING FOR THE APCH WHEN WE BEGAN AN IMMEDIATE CLB IN RESPONSE TO TCASII. WHILE CLBING; WE HAD TFC IN SIGHT. THE CONFLICTING ACFT CONTINUED TO CLOSE ON US AND DROP LOWER FROM OUR POS. CLOSEST POINT OF CONFLICT: 1/8 MI TO JUST UNDERNEATH AND APPROX 300-500 FT LATERAL SEPARATION. REMIND YOU; WE WERE CLRED FOR AN APCH! HARDLY SEPARATION BTWN PARALLEL APCHS TO E/W RWYS. THE CONFLICTING ACFT APPEARED TO BE IN ABOUT 45 DEG BANK AND I BELIEVE IF IT HAD NOT STEEPENED IT'S BANK; IT WOULD HAVE MOVED UNDER US AND; PERHAPS; A 1/4 MI TO OUR L! BECAUSE OF THE CONFLICT; WE ENSURED OUR POS NEVER DRIFTED R OF CTRLINE. AT APPROX 6.5 MI DME; WE STOPPED CLB IN RESPONSE TO THE TCASII 'CLR OF CONFLICT' CALL AND THE VISUAL INDICATION WE WERE DIVERGING. WE REACHED A MAX HEIGHT OF APPROX 3100 FT; WENT INTO FULL LNDG CONFIGN; DSNDED AT 1700-1900 FPM TO REINTERCEPT THE GLIDE PATH. WE REESTABLISHED AT ABOUT 1 1/2 MI DME FROM RWY WITH AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG.
